Overview

More than 357,000 people die of work-related accidents and workplace injuries each year. For example in the oil and gas industry more that 70 percent of the incidents are due to human error.

Boundless-Systems Intelligent EHS is a product that uses artificial intelligence in to help prevent the occurrence of accidents and to achieve improvement in health and safety practices. This product detects unsafe and complex conditions by processing CCTV images and provides timely information to the exposed person to prevent adverse events.

Also, our system automatically generates the reports needed by EHS managers and authorities using Machine Vision technology to provide the safety team of construction sites with more helpful and accurate information on employee safety.

Overview on how Intelligent EHS can help the construction industry?

Projects vary in size and date of completion and given the complexities that various projects such as construction and oil and gas projects face, they may take an extended period to finish and deliver.

Each year, human errors could potentially put an end to projects because of the overhead expense that they introduce, or they can jeopardize the safety and wellbeing of staff and workers. For example, according to the Fatality Assessment and Control Evaluation (FACE) every day approximately 13 workers lose their lives because of in work hazards.

People are not robots a variety of aspects such as working conditions, mental health and even human relations affect how they perform their tasks. There are various working conditions which could affect how humans work but working in inappropriate weather conditions, unsafe situations, fatigue or lack of knowledge are only a few that come into mind. The most notable incidents include falling from heights, accident with moving vehicle or falling object. Because of these varying conditions monitoring working and construction sites are both vital and very hard at the same time

Even though adapting EHS management systems has had a significant impact on reducing the occurrence of incidents, HSE and management teams located onsite do not have the resource to continuously supervise every person in every condition.

On the other hand, providing daily reports in huge projects or expanding projects requires a team in itself to manage, analyse and compile the reports. Presently, employees collect data manually and managers demand reports daily or even hourly to make important decisions on improving the safety conditions on the job sites.

Until now all has been talked about identification and monitoring but the other side of this coin is the timely prevention of incidents and notifying all the stakeholders of the danger in real-time. Providing timely warnings of unsafe conditions to project managers and HSE managers will allow effective decision-making at the right time to prevent future accidents. Therefore, the most important problems which Boundless-Systems Intelligent EHS tries to solve through artificial intelligence include:

1.Establish 24/7 monitoring throughout the project to identify unsafe conditions.

2.Constant data collection from the project site.

3.Preventing human error and taking preventive measures.

4.Timely informing the project stockholders on important events before their occurrence.

5.Generate standard reports such as anomalies from the project.

What Solutions does Intelligent EHS provide ?
Monitoring working at height conditions

•According to OSHA, falling from height are the leading cause of death in construction sites our Intelligent EHS automatically detects the following conditions:

1.The system can detect the personal protective equipment needed to work in heights such as helmets and harnesses.

2.The system identifies the entry of unauthorized persons to the work area and informs the HSE team in real-time.

3.The system detects whether the scaffolds in use are secured in accordance with the standard tags installed at the entrance of each section and alarms if people will use the scaffolds.

4.The system triggers an alarm if people approach unsecured edges.

5.The system detects objects placed on the floor of the scaffolding floors and sends warnings.

Unsafe Electrical Installations

•In 2016, non-compliance actions with regards to electrical safety best practices resulted in the death of one out of 34 work related casualties. Boundless-Systems Intelligent EHS system, with ongoing monitoring and safety monitoring in this area, helps prevent the occurrence of such incidents.

1.The system has the ability to identify unauthorized access to the restricted area(s) and issues an alert appropriately.

2.The system has the ability to identify personnel approaching the non-secure area(s) and informs the managers.

3.The PPE control sub-system monitors the usage of such equipment by licensed people approaching the equipment and areas with electricity equipment and, if the appropriate equipment is not used then alarms will to sound and notifications will be sent to managers.

Unsafe Loading Operations

According to the BLS over the past 4 years, 220 personals were killed due to incidents of non-compliance with safety regulations in the United States alone while dealing with various loading conditions. More than 50 percent of such accidents occurred in dealing with objects in motion. Controlling permissible loading equipment, the safety of loading, and the use of appropriate equipment are control measures that reduce the possibility of such incidents. Our system prevents accidents with permanent monitoring of loading equipment and areas where loading operations are carried out. Boundless-Systems Intelligent EHS supports the following conditions:

1.Car and truck equipment should have TAG health and safety and must also operate within the Intelligent EHS cameras. The system checks the device’s safety token and if a device has no sign or an abnormal sign is detected, an alert will be issued.

2.The system controls the loading area according to the definition of the hazardous region for each loading premises and prevents the occurrence of an incident if a person other than the authorized personnel is present in the area.

3.The system issues a warning to prevent accidents by detecting crane movements during unauthorized hours.

4.The system alerts if it detects crane’s movement while no personnel are present in the specified area.

Unsafe Traffic Conditions

According to the NIOSH in 2014, road accidents was indicated as one the major incident reasons in the oil and gas industry. Controlling vehicle traffic, preventing unauthorized speed, moving on a planned track, and controlling how cars are being parked will be monitored by Boundless-Systems Intelligent EHS.

1.The system tracks the speed of vehicles and reports if the drivers exceed the specified speed limit.

2.The system detects and reports the overtaking of vehicles in the operational areas.

3.The system recognizes unauthorized parking in designated areas.

4.The system issues a warning if it spots a vehicle which is not in the list of authorized vehicles.

Unsafe Night Shift Conditions

Fatigue costs U.S. employers more than $130 billion a year in lost of productivity, and costs the average American company with 1,000 employees $1 million a year, according to the United States National Safety Council. Boundless-Systems Intelligent EHS system detects night shifts and applies standard controls in the night shift to quickly detect hazards to prevent accidents. The following describes the predefined control measures in our system:

1.The system controls the presence of sufficient light in the operating and sensitive areas and if needed the light signal is reduced to the specified level.

2.

The system identifies the presence of unauthorized persons, vehicles or animals in prohibited areas during night and will activate the designated control measures or notify the appropriate manager accordingly.

3.The system identifies the people approaching high risk areas and alerts them of the hazards.

4.Traffic regulations are monitored during night shifts.

Unsafe Excavation Operations

The excavation hazard rate is 112% higher than the general rate of construction risk. And many accidents caused by non-observance of safety in the excavation process, such as falling into the pit, can be prevented by creating a permanent monitoring system such as Boundless-Systems Intelligent EHS. In our system, the following processes are anticipated to identify hazards before the incidents:

1.The system will measure the distance of the excavation machinery from the digging edge and issue a warning if it is less than optimal.

2.The system identifies and alerts the people of the excavation area and prevents unauthorized access to the area.

3.The system controls access to the area based on working shifts. For example, during night shifts access to the excavation area is limited.

4.The system identifies and approves the approaching vehicles to the area.

5.Personal protective equipment such as helmet, shoes and work clothes are rigorously monitored.

6.The system identifies heavy machinery and alerts if they enter the excavation area.

Detection Modes that Intelligent EHS supports

Engine Overview

Boundless-Systems Intelligent EHS detection engine plays a crucial part in recognizing the concepts contained in the images. The Intelligent EHS system can recognize and identify human-defined concepts through the use of multiple machine vision technologies, including deep learning. The Intelligent EHS system has made it possible for different detection engines to be applied to camera images to make hardware resources optimally used for the main purpose.

An individual safety equipment detection engine is a set of motors which, by processing images of people, detects whether equipment such as helmets, shoes, gloves and industrial glasses has been used by the personnel. Also, safety features such as colour and type are identified and used in subsequent processes.

Unauthorized Access Detection

Our system identifies the presence of unauthorized persons and equipment in the context of the range determined by the HSE expert.

HSE Tags Detection

HSE tags and colour tags are used to determine the security status of different locations in projects. The system identifies the predefined standard tags and intelligently performs control measures for the location concerning the installed tags.

Detecting Objects

The Intelligent EHS system can detect objects on the ground with a specific colour field. In this engine, it does not recognize the type of object on the ground, but only the presence of an object in a specified location.

Vehicle Detection

The system recognizes all kinds of heavy and ordinary vehicles depending on their type. Currently, the system identifies more than 50 vehicle types, colours, and models.

Car Plate Identification

After detecting the vehicles, the Intelligent EHS system detects its license plate information and triggers an alarm if the license is not on the authorization list.

Speed Control

The system controls the speed of cars or other vehicles using the image processing method.

Smoke and Fire Detection

Early warning smoke detectors are designed to detect a fire during the early stages (less than 0.5 seconds) using deep learning.
